What If?

 What If?

Have you ever had a silly question? One you asked as a joke, never to get a real answer. Or maybe you wondered crazy things, wanting a logical explanation. But no one would ever take the time to come up with these deranged responses. That is unless you are Randall Munroe, the author of a No. 1 Best Seller that gives "serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions" in his book What if?.

I like this book. It had many funny jokes in it but also was very knowledgeable. I learned a lot of things in this book. There's a small section talking about hair dryers (pg. 52) and it says that as long as the box plugged in to the outlet isn't hot, it is not using electricity, at least not enough to even raise your electric bill up one penny for that entire day. Which is good information. Now I probably wouldn't care enough to ever look this up, but it's cool to know

There's little sections that answer "weird and worrying questions". It's like a rapid fire of questions that are concerning. Like on page 60 it asks "is it possible to cry so much you dehydrate yourself - Karl W" and the answer is just "...Karl, Is everything ok?". Something about this gives comedic relief from the very serious one to four page answers of the other questions. Although I'm sure some of us are wondering if Karl was being serious when he asked that.

It was honestly really cool to hear all of these explanations to questions we've all asked before. Things ranging from "what if everyone actually had only one soulmate, a random person from somewhere in the world?' to "How many Lego bricks would it take to carry traffic from London to New York?" to even "how high can a human throw something"?". Which is pretty high, 16 giraffes tall to be exact. Overall I would give this book 5/5 stars, It always kept my interest and was fun to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something fun and lightweight to dive into.

  1. I like the obscure questions that you bring out of the book to show what its about. It helps get me thinking and its nice to know those things. The way you brought some of the comedy from the book and wondered if it was serious also helps add depth. I rate this 4/5 stars.

  3. I like the format and style. I think I might consider reading the book, because it sounded interesting, and it would be cool to analyze the book, and its scientific questions.

  4. This sounds like the kind of book I'd like! I read something similar called The Book Of Useless Information. It was basically just a fact book of information that had no purpose whatsoever other than to make you go "Huh, that's interesting"
